SIUE Successful Playing Their Style of Game
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars moved into the top spot of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's standings with its sixth consecutive victory Sunday.
In wins over the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College, the Cougars played extremely well, according to SIUE Coach Ed Huneke.
"We showed the way we really like to play, keeping possession of the ball, scoring goals and playing solid defense," said Huneke.
Huneke believes that a key to the Cougars' success is the play of freshman Tim Lindsay (Florissant, Mo.).
"Tim Lindsay is stepping up and playing well at midfield," said Huneke.
The team as a whole is also showing good potency offensively while outscoring opponents 9-0 over the weekend.
SIUE has their last two games of the season coming up this week which could have some potential implications for the team's postseason hopes.
"We need to win these games to lock up home field advantage going into the (Great Lakes Valley) conference tournament,” said Huneke. SIUE is 9-3-3 overall and 9-2-1 in the GLVC. A win over Missouri-Rolla Wednesday at 7 p.m. would give the Cougars the No. 1 seed for the fourth consecutive year.
Huneke said that keys to the Cougars' success continue to be the defense of Zach Bauer (St. Charles, Mo.), Mike Zaegel (St. Louis) and Randy Roy (St. Louis).
Huneke also credits the strong play to the increased confidence of the team.
Senior midfielder Victor Pacheco (Sao Luis, Brazil) also is on the verge of breaking a long-standing SIUE record. Pacheco recorded his 29th career assist, tying the mark set by John Carenza from 1968 to 1971. John Carenza, a 1970 and 1971 All-American, recently was inducted into the SIUE Athletics Hall of Fame.
