SIUE Men's Soccer Faces UW-Parkside, Lewis
With two nationally-ranked opponents in the weekend ahead, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer coach hopes his 11th-ranked team is up to the task.
SIUE, 2-1-3, face 10th-ranked UW-Parkside on Friday at 1:15 p.m. and 15th-ranked Lewis on Sunday at noon. UW-Parkside enters the game 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC, having outscored its opponents 19-2 in its four GLVC contests. Lewis is 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC.
The Cougars are coming off a win against Bellarmine and a tie against Northern Kentucky. Huneke said the Cougars are going to have to be sharp against UW-Parkside and Lewis.
"We're not quite clicking on possession to the degree I want," Huneke said.
Kevin Bielicki (St. Louis) scored his second goal of the season in the Northern Kentucky game. Bielicki converted a cross from Dustin Attarian (St. Louis) into a header which bounced in a few yards from the goal, cross the scoring line and touched the top of the net.
Huneke said the combinations like the Attarian-to-Bielicki score have been good, but the Cougars need to be more consistent.
"We play segments really well, but there are others that we just get disjointed," Huneke said.
SIUE senior midfielder Victor Pacheco (Sao Luis, Brazil) continued his charge toward the all-time assists record held by soon-to-be SIUE Athletics Hall of Famer John Carenza. Pacheco has 27. Carenza's record is 29, set from 1968 to 1972.
