December 15, 2005 Huneke Named Region Coach of the Year For the second consecutive year, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer coach Ed Huneke has been named Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Huneke led a Cougars squad to the national semifinals of NCAA Division II men’s soccer for the third time in five years and a 16-3-3 record this season. “A number of factors have to contribute to make this happen,” said Huneke. “I have a good staff, the support of the administration and quality players. I just happen to be the one that they recognize, but it is a group accomplishment.” The Cougars were Great Lakes Region Champions, making it to the Final Four for the second straight year. Earlier this season, Huneke became the winningest coach in SIUE history, passing Hall of Famer Bob Guelker. Huneke has a record of 225-147-28 in 20 years at SIUE. This is the third time in the last five years Huneke won the honor of being named Regional Coach of the Year in 1997, 2001, and 2004. Huneke has also been named GLVC Coach of the Year three times. (1997, 2001, 2003) SIUE was ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the NSCAA/adidas national poll every week except the final two polls when the Cougars ranked fourth. “We are the benefactors of good momentum,” said Huneke. “When it is working for you, these kinds of things happen. To make it work for you, there are a lot of variables that contribute to it.” The Cougars finished the 2005 campaign ranked in the second in NCAA Division II with a 0.62 shutout percentage, third with a 0.50 goals against average, and fifth in shots on goals save percentage at 0.855. Huneke and his Cougars will enter next season with a 34-game unbeaten streak in Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season contests.
