November 12, 2005 Cougars Advance On PKs over Truman State EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team is still alive in the NCAA Tournament after advancing on penalty kicks 4-2 over 12th-ranked Truman State on Saturday night at Korte Stadium. The fourth-ranked Cougars advance to play Carson-Newman in the NCAA Quarterfinals next weekend. The date and time will be announced next week. Carson-Newman also advance on penalty kicks 3-1 over Catawba. For the second season in a row, and the third time in five years the Cougars claim the Great Lakes Regional Championship. Brian Higgins netted the final penalty kick that clinched the Cougars advancement. Both teams scored on their first two penalty kicks, but on the Bulldogs' third attempt SIUE goalkeeper Greg Crook made a save on Kevin Barry's shot. John Matthews gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead, and then Paul Link hit the left post setting the stage for the senior captain Higgins. Neither team could break through in regulation or two periods of overtime with both teams recording 13 shots. Crook made three saves for the Cougars, and Nate Gibson had three saves for the Bulldogs. Pete Cacciatore led the Cougars with three shots on goal. Lars Pottgiesser and Sean Birrell each had four shots for Truman State. -siue cougars- |
