October 10, 2005 No. 2 Cougars Hold Edge in the GLVC EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s soccer team enters its last road trip of the season with a one-game lead in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The second-ranked Cougars are 11-1-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league play as they head to the Bluegrass State to face Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine. “They are both capable of knocking off teams,” said SIUE men’s soccer coach Ed Huneke. “We have to make sure we are not surprised by either team.” SIUE is two games in front of Rockhurst (loss side) for first place in the league. The Cougars hold the head-to-head advantage over the Hawks after defeating them two weeks ago. SIUE is riding a five-game winning streak, and the Cougars are unbeaten in their last 12 games. The Cougars also are unbeaten in their last 30 GLVC regular season games dating back to Oct. 2002. The Cougars added to that winning streak with wins over Lewis and 11th-ranked UW-Parkside over the weekend. “We have a real history of battles with those teams,” said Huneke. “We knew these past two weekends were important for postseason considerations.” In the win over the Flyers, juniors Trevor House (St. Louis) and Ameen Attas (Saudi Arabia) scored their first goals of the season. “House played good against Lewis,” said Huneke. “It was nice to see Ameen get one.” Victor Pacheco (San Luis, Brazil) continues to lead the Cougars attack. Pacheco ranks first on the team in goals (6), assists (4), and points (16). His goal against the Rangers gave the Cougars the victory. “Victor’s restart shot is deadly,” said Huneke. “When those shots are game winners it shows his importance to our team.” Senior back Mike Zaegel (St. Louis, Mo.) leads a Cougar defense that is allowing 0.45 goals per game with eight shutouts this year. “When we are solid on defense,” said Huneke, “Mike is one of our best players that doesn’t always get recognized.” -siue cougars- |
