November 5, 2004 Cougars Advance to GLVC Title Game John Matthews scored off a corner kick from Victor Pacheco at 40:30 as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville blanked Quincy University 1-0 in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. SIUE, 15-2-2, advances to the championship game of the GLVC Tournament, set for Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cougars face Lewis University, which defeated Wisconsin-Parkside 2-1 in overtime in the other semifinal match. Lewis 16-2-2 entering Sunday's matchup. The Cougars controlled the tempo against the Hawks, outshooting Quincy 15-8. Mike Banner led the charge with six shots. But it was a corner kick that flattened the Hawks. Pacheco sent the ball to the near post and Matthews was able to flick it off a Quincy defender for the eventual game-winner. It was Matthews' fourth goal of the season. The Cougars now have eight different players who have scored four or more goals. It was the 11th shutout of the season for SIUE, including a 0-0 tie earlier this season with Quincy. Greg Crook went the distance in goal for the Cougars and finished with two saves. Brian Forrest had five saves for Quincy. -siue cougars- |
