November 4, 2004 Higgins, Burgund Honored Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Brian Higgins (St. Louis) and Michael Burgund (St. Louis) was named to the 2004 Academic All-District V College Division men's Soccer first team. The Academic All-District team includes all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA school from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and parts of Canada. They are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. As members of the first team, both players will be listed on the ballot to become an Academic All-American. Higgins, a junior midfielder, holds a 3.62 grade point average and is seeking a bachelor's in nursing. Higgins has started all 18 games for the Cougars and has tallied four goals and three assists. The Cougar captain scored the game-winning goal against Indianapolis and recorded three assists in the Missouri-Rolla game. Burgund, a senior defender with a 3.36 grade point average in health education, has started all 18 games for the Cougars. He is tied for the team lead in goals scored with five. Burgund netted three goals and an assists in a five-game span from Sep. 10 to Sept. 24. He has been a key part of SIUE'd defense which has held their opponents to 5.8 shots per game and a 0.53 goals against average. SIUE's next action is Friday when its plays host to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Korte Stadium. The No. 1-seeded Cougars play fourth-seeded Quincy at 7:30 p.m. -siue cougars- |
