October 15, 2004 Matthews Hits 2OT Game-Winner John Matthews hit the game-winner with 1:11 left in double overtime as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 in men's college soccer. Matthews scored from 15 yards out as the fifth-ranked Cougars extended their streak to 19 games without a loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season play. SIUE is now 12-1-1 overall and 7-0-1 in GLVC play. The Cougars face Quincy on Sunday with game time set for 1 p.m. at Korte Stadium. A win on Sunday or next weekend against Bellarmine would clinch first place in the GLVC and would afford SIUE the honor of playing host for the GLVC Tournament On Nov. 5-7. Missouri-St. Louis, 6-8-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the GLVC, manages just three shots off SIUE and looked as if it were playing for a tie more than a win. None of its three shots afforded winning goalkeeper Greg Crook with an attempt for a save. The Cougars' offense once again dominated play by outshooting the Rivermen 27-3. SIUE took seven shots in overtime with Matthews' game-winner being its final. -siue cougars- |
