Cougars Roll Over McKendree
Cal Thomas scored twice as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville overpowered McKendree in men's college soccer action Thursday night at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars evened their record at 1-1 with a clear victory over the Bearcats. SIUE outshot McKendree 14-5.
Thomas got the Cougars on the scoreboard early with a header from Victor Pacheco at 7:44. Pacheco restarted the play off a McKendree foul and placed the ball 12 yards away from the goal as Thomas headed the ball in past starting McKendree goalkeeper Tim Steeg.
Addae Rique scored his first collegiate goal at SIUE at 37:19 off an assist from Pete Cacciatore.
Thomas put the Cougars up by three goals at 59:11 on a sharp inside pass from Rique.
McKendree's Steve Frierdich, who has all four of his team's shots, scored on his final shot from four yards out on an assist from Nathan Doherty.
SIUE's next action is Saturday when the Cougars travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Christian Brothers.
