Men’s Soccer Faces Crucial Tournament
Last season, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s men’s soccer losses to Truman State and Rockhurst may have been the difference when NCAA Tournament bids were handed out.
After a 13-4-2 record and a Great Lakes Valley Conference title last season, the 2003 Cougars are hungry to return to the form that helped them vault to the Final Four in 2001. Coach Ed Huneke knows this weekend’s Soccer Bowl Tournament at Quincy will be important.
“It’s very important for implications of an NCAA bid,” said Huneke.
The Cougars play Truman State on Saturday at 5 p.m. followed by Rockhurst on Sunday at 5 p.m.
SIUE completed its exhibition season with a 1-0 victory over Lindenwood, which is ranked No. 10 in the preseason NAIA poll.
Michael Burgund (Bethalto) scored from three yards out on an assist from Victor Pacheco (San Luis, Brazil) at 57:46. SIUE outshot the Lions 14-4.
“Defensively, we played better than I thought we would,” said Huneke. “We were able to frustrate their offense. They couldn’t go through us or over the top.”
SIUE hopes to avenge two of last season’s four losses to Truman State and Rockhurst. SIUE lost to Truman State 2-1 in overtime and fell to Rockhurst 2-0 in the 2002 season opener.
