Defending GLVC Men's Soccer Champions Open Aug. 30
         The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team will begin work on Aug. 30 in Quincy to defend its 2002 Great Lakes Valley Conference crown.
         Coach Ed Huneke and his Cougars play at Soccer Bowl XII, an annual tournament in Quincy which features some of the region's top teams. SIUE starts with Truman State on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. followed by Rockhurst at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31.
         The Cougars open their home schedule at Korte Stadium and Bob Guelker Field on Thursday, Sept. 4, against McKendree College.
         SIUE has seven regular-season home games on the schedule, including GLVC contests against Lewis on Sept. 26, Saint Joseph's on Oct. 3, Wisconsin-Parkside on Oct. 5, Southern Indiana on Oct. 17, and Kentucky Wesleyan on Oct. 19.
         The Oct. 19 game also will spotlight a couple of major events, including SIUE's Homecoming. During halftime of the game, Coach Huneke will announce the 2003 winner of the Jack Blake Award, which honors the late SIUE All-American and Olympian.
         SIUE posted a 13-4-2 record last season, having won its final five games of the season while winning its second-ever GLVC Tournament. The first opportunity to see the Cougars in action at home during the exhibition season is Saturday, Aug. 16, against the SIUE Alumni team. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
