Three Men's Soccer Players Earn All-American Honors
A school record three Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer players were honored as All-Americans by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Cal Thomas (Rochester) and Addae Rique (Trinidad & Tobago) were named to the first team. Tim Velten (St. Louis) was tabbed for the third team. As a team, SIUE boasted a perfect 10-0 record in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and a 16-4-1 record overall.
It is the first time SIUE has had three players honored with All-America certificates in the same season. In SIUE's storied soccer history, only three other times had SIUE even had two All-Americans. That occurred in 1970 when Jack Blake and John Carenza won the honor. In 1974, Chris Carenza and Bob Kessen were so honored. Greg Makowski and John Stremlau were All-Americans in 1975.
Coach Ed Huneke now has had All-Americans in each of the last three seasons after Justin McMillian was named in 2001 and Chris Camacho was named in 2002.
"I'm extremely ecstatic that three of our players were recognized. It's a reflection of how good they are and how good this year's team was," said Huneke.
Thomas, a forward, completed his collegiate career with 13 goals and six assists this past season. He also led SIUE with five game-winning goals.
Rique, a midfielder, took the GLVC by storm, winning the conference's Player of the Year award in his first season as a Cougar. A junior, Rique led the Cougars in scoring with 14 goals and 10 assists. He also was second on the team with 61 shots.
Velten, a sophomore back, was a key reason for SIUE's success on defense. The Cougars allowed a 0.85 goals against average. As a marking back, Velten also pushed the offense with three goals, including a pair of game-winning goals near the end of the season.
While SIUE had three on the All-American list, the rest of the GLVC had just two other players. Southern Indiana's Duncan Bray was named to the second team while Cathal Brady, the GLVC's Freshman of the Year from Lewis, was named to the third team nationally.
With the addition of the three All-Americans, SIUE now has 22 All-Americans overall.
