Four SIUE Men's Soccer Players Tabbed All-Region
(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Four Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer players received news that each have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association All-Central Region team.
Tim Velten (St. Louis), Addae Rique (Trinidad & Tobago), and Cal Thomas (Rochester) were named to the first team. Bret Richardson (Mt. Vernon, Ind.) was named to the second team.
The Cougar foursome were instrumental in SIUE advancing to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. SIUE finished the season with a 16-4-1 record, including a perfect 10-0 record during the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season. All four Cougars also were named first team All-GLVC.
Velten, a sophomore, was a key part of the defense which held opponents to a 0.85 goals against average. As a marking back, Velten also pushed forward for three goals, including a pair of game-winners.
Rique, a junior, led SIUE in scoring with 14 goals and 10 assists. He completed his first season with the Cougars scoring four game-winning goals and was second on the team with 61 shots.
Thomas ended his collegiate career with his best season. The senior scored 13 goals and added six assists. His five game-winning goals led the team.
Richardson, a senior, tied the school record for career shutouts with 20. His 0.79 goals against average was among the best in the nation and led the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Richardson grabbed 78 saves and posted 11 shutouts, the most in a season since Chester Kowalewski recorded 12 in the 1973 season.
