Cougars Eliminated From NCAA Tournament
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Lars Pottgiesser scored a hat trick as No. 2 Truman State eliminated No. 13 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the NCAA Division Men's Soccer Tournament.
SIUE, 16-4-1, watched its season come to a close on Saturday in a 5-2 loss. Victor Pacheco (Brazil) scored both goals for SIUE.
The Cougars scored first as Pacheco scored on a breakaway with an assist from Addae Rique. Truman State, however, answered with three goals. Pottgiesser picked up the first at 37:42. Paul Link followed at 42:50 and Sean Birrell scored the eventual winner at 52:24.
The hard-fought game featured 45 fouls, including 37 from host Truman State. Eight cards also were assessed, including a yellow card and a red card to Rique within a three-minute timespan.
Playing one man down in the final 21 minutes of the game, SIUE surrendered a pair of goals after closing the lead at 59:43 on Pacheco's 12th goal of the season.
Truman State now takes its perfect 20-0 record to the final eight.
