Lewis Wins GLVC Title
Lewis University scored three unanswered goals to top No. 10 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium in the 2003 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer championship game.
SIUE, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, is still expected to receive an NCAA tournament bid when selections are announced Monday afternoon.
SIUE (16-3) opened the scoring early. Pete Cacciatore scored three minutes into the game on a tough angle to give the Cougars the early advantage.
Any momentum gained by SIUE after the fast start was eliminated when Lewis' Alejandro Blinder scored four minutes later. Alejandro took a Mike Dahm pass in the box and scored off SIUE goalkeeper Bret Richardson to knot the game 1-1.
Both teams played scoreless soccer for the next 50 minutes until Dahm scored an unassisted goal in the 59th minute to give Lewis a 2-1 lead.
Lewis' Cathal Brady, the 2003 GLVC Freshman of the Year, scored with 24 seconds left on a breakaway to assure Lewis (12-5-2) its second GLVC title in three years.
Lewis goalkeeper Jordan Gustman made seven saves in the game.
