Six Cougars Claim GLVC Honors
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville midfielder Addae Rique (Trinidad & Tobago) was tabbed the 2003 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year and five players were named All-GLVC when the All-Conference teams were announced Friday afternoon at a luncheon.
Rique, Bret Richardson (Mt. Vernon, Ind.), Cal Thomas (Rochester) and Tim Velten (St. Louis) were named first team All-GLVC. Pete Cacciatore (St. Louis) picked up second team All-GLVC honors. Coach Ed Huneke claimed Coach of the Year honors after leading the Cougars to a 15-2 regular-season record and a 10-0 mark in conference play.
Rique, a junior, led the team and the GLVC with nine assists to go along with 11 goals. His 31 points on the season is the second-most in the conference.
Richardson, a senior goalkeeper, is second nationally with a 0.44 goals against average. He recorded 10 shutouts on the season and allowed only one goal in conference play.
Thomas, a senior forward, led the conference with 32 points after scoring a league-high 13 goals and adding six assists. He has registered at least one point in 10 consecutive games.
Velten, a sophomore back and the 2002 Co-Freshman of the Year, anchored a defense that allowed a league-low 0.53 goals per game. He has also scored three goals on the season, including the first goal in SIUE's 2-0 against Lewis that awarded the Cougars the first seed in the GLVC Tournament.
Cacciatore, a sophomore forward, registered four goals and five assists on the season. He scored twice in the Cougars' victory at Missouri Southern.
SIUE plays its semifinal match in the GLVC Tournament tonight against Quincy. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Korte Stadium.
