Cougars Improve to 13-2
With a 12-game winning streak, the SIUE men’s soccer team shouldn’t feel any pressure, but there is some in the final week of the regular season.
SIUE, 13-2 overall and 8-0 in the GLVC, travels to Bellarmine on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. contest. On October 26, SIUE returns home to face Lewis in a 5 p.m. makeup game.
The Lewis-SIUE matchup may determine the No. 1 seed and the host site for the upcoming GLVC Tournament.
Coach Ed Huneke said he is pleased with both his offense and defense.
On offense, senior forward Cal Thomas (Rochester) collected his 12th goal of the season in a 5-0 triumph over Kentucky Wesleyan. He earlier had scored both of SIUE’s goals in a 2-1 win over Southern Indiana, a win which placed SIUE in first place alone.
“Cal has been getting great support from his teammates, but the thing is that Cal has been finishing his chances,” Huneke said.
Addae Rique (Trinidad & Tobago), Brian Higgins (St. Louis) and Pete Cacciatore (St. Louis) have provided the support for Thomas’ strong season.
On defense, Huneke turns to several players who have allowed just two goals in eight GLVC games as SIUE has outscored his fellow league players 21-2.
Much of the credit also goes to senior goalkeeper Bret Richardson (Mt. Vernon, Ind.), who holds a 0.50 goals against average with 49 saves.
