SIUE Wins Cougar Classic
WOOD RIVER, ILL. - On Sunday, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's golf team won the rain-shortened Cougar Classic for the second straight year.
"It was a big win for us," said SIUE men's golf coach Kyle Viehl.
Viehl said that the added practice time going into the tournament helped the team rebound after a slow start.
SIUE defeated 14 other teams, including fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference members Indianapolis, Missouri-St. Louis and Quincy.
Along with the team win, Kyle Lickenbrock (Freeburg) won with a five-under-par 67. Lickenbrock won the tournament by three strokes over Zane Belden, of McKendree.
"He (Lickenbrock) was bogey-free during his round Saturday. He is playing well and, hopefully, he can keep it up going into the regional tournament," added Viehl.
SIUE next heads to the Great Lakes Regional on Sept. 25-26 at Hawk's Head Golf Course in South Haven, Mich.
"The team's goal is to place in the top six in the regional tournament," said Viehl. "If we place in the top six it would put us in a strong position."
