February 28, 2008 Cougars Shock No. 7 Drury EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Doug Taylor (McClure) had career night as the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball team defeated No. 7-ranked Drury 87-49 at the Vadalabene Center. SIUE, 16-10 overall and 9-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, guaranteed its spot in next week's league tournament. A win Saturday against Rockhurst at 3 p.m. would give SIUE the second seed in the GLVC West Division and a home GLVC Tournament quarterfinal game next Tuesday. The win also marked a record for Coach Lennox Forrester. His 16 wins are now the most ever by a first-year SIUE coach, passing Jim Dudley's 15 during the 1970-71 season. Going into the Thursday's game, Taylor needed two blocks to surpass Dan Heimos on the SIUE all-time career block list. Taylor sent three shots into the crowd, making the new Cougar record 136. In addition to coming up big defensively for the Cougars, Taylor also dropped a career-best 19 points. T.J. Gray (Chicago) poured in 18 points, going 5-6 from behind the arc. Asa Clayborne (Springfield) and John Edmison (Springfield) each had 14 points, while J.B. Jones (Belleville) chipped in another 10 points to go along with his eight assists. Chris Ijames and Collins Harris paced the Panthers offensively with each scoring 10 points. SIUE's offense took over Thursday, shooting 58.8 percent from the field, including 12 of 19 from three-point range. After taking a 35-24 lead at halftime, SIUE was stunning from the field in the second half, hitting 68 percent of its shots and 80 percent from behind the three-point line. -siue cougars- |
