Saint Joseph's Trips Up Cougars
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball didn't find its shooting rhythm Saturday in an 82-60 loss to Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Saint Joseph's.
The Cougars fell behind by double digits at the halftime buzzer when SJC's Ronald Coleman rebounded a missed three-pointer from teammate Devin Thomas and tipped it back in for a 38-27 lead. SIUE came within six points with 8:12 to play in the game, but the Pumas seemed to have an answer for every Cougar score.
SIUE fell to 8-6 overall and 2-5 in the GLVC. SJC improved its record to 9-7 and 5-3 in the GLVC.
T.J. Gray ignited SIUE with 21 points. The GLVC's leading three-point shooter recorded five more treys Saturday.
Saint Joseph's used a balanced offensive attack to keep SIUE at bay. Guard Andrew Helmer finished with a double-double of a team-leading 14 points and 10 rebounds. Three other players scored in double figures for the Pumas. SJC also won the battle of the boards 43-28.
SJC beefed up its lead in the final three minutes by hitting eight straight free throws while SIUE missed seven of its last eight shots from the field.
SIUE next travels to Kentucky Wesleyan Thursday to take on Kentucky Wesleyan in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
