January 14, 2008 Cougars Set Sights on Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- After seeing its five-game winning streak ended this past weekend, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball team has set its sights on Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's. SIUE, now 7-5 overall and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, hope to return to the win column this week after being handed a pair of road losses at Rockhurst and Drury. "We need to regroup on a few things this week, especially shooting and rebounding. We just need to stick with the fundamentals, and we will be fine," said SIUE coach Lennox Forrester. The fundamentals certainly include rebounding where SIUE is ranked fourth in the GLVC with 36.0 per game. The bad news is that the Cougars have given up a league worst 37.4 rebounds per game. "Basically, we need to make sure that we are boxing out on every play," said Forrester. SIUE's offense set a school record for three-pointers attempted in the Rockhurst game and then again at Drury. T.J. Gray (Chicago), who leads the GLVC with four three-pointers per game, took a school-record 17 three-point field goal attempts at Drury. Senior guard J.B. Jones needs just one more start for 100 starts in his four-year career at SIUE. Jones, who scored 1,000 points earlier this season, is No. 11 all-time in scoring at SIUE and needs six points to pass Travis Wallbaum (1996-2000). He needs 12 more assists for 500 and one more steal for 200. Tip-off for Thursday's game against Indianapolis is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the Vadalabene Center. Indianapolis enters the game with a 10-4 record and a 4-2 mark in the GLVC. The game against Saint Joseph's on Saturday will begin at 3 p.m. Saint Joseph's enters the week at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC. Both Saint Joseph's and Indianapolis play in the GLVC East Division. This will be the only regular season meeting with the Cougars for the two schools. -siue cougars- |
