Cougars Crush Harris-Stowe 91-51
Six players scored in double figures as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville opened the men's basketball season with a 91-51 victory over Harris-Stowe at the Vadalabene Center.
Edwardsville's Dan Lytle enjoyed his homecoming game, having transferred to SIUE from Evansville for his senior season. Lytle led SIUE with 16 points and 11 rebounds in 22 minutes played.
Okawville native Tyler Hackstadt also enjoyed a homecoming with a double-double of his own. The transfer from Lamar picked up 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
The last time two Cougars recorded double-doubles in the same game was Jan. 31, 1998, against Quincy by Rusty Sarnes and Nathan Kreke.
Ron Jones was the other Cougar starter in double figures with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Jones set the SIUE record last season with 74 three-pointers.
Joel Jaye led the offense coming off the bench with 14 points and seven rebounds. Justin Ward and Kris Crosby also scored in double figures off the bench with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Cougars pounded the boards, outrebounding the Hornets 61-29. That included 20 offensive rebounds.
The 40-point margin of victory was the largest since the 1994-1995 season when SIUE embarrassed Sanford Brown 140-51. The 91-point effort also was the most since January 24, 2002, in a 95-92 overtime loss against Wisconsin-Parkside.
Harris-Stowe was led by guard Stanley Dooley, who led all scorers with 17 points.
SIUE's next action is Monday when it entertains St. Mary's (Texas) with tip-off time set for 7:30 p.m.
