GLVC Names Fall Scholar Athletes for 2005
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Seven student-athletes have been selected as Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the fall 2005 season in their respective sport for the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The league selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American standards (3.2), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is done by each institution's Faculty Athletic Representative.

Men's Cross Country: Andy Tremble, Lewis University
Andy Tremble, a native of Oregon, Ill., is a Nursing major at Lewis University. As a junior, he was the number one runner for the Flyers and led his team to a second place finish at the GLVC Championship when he was the individual champion with a career-best 24:26.37 in the 8K. He tied for eighth place at NCAA II Great Lakes Regionals. Tremble was All-GLVC, GLVC Runner of the Year, All-Great Lakes Region (sixth place), All-American (32nd place), and GLVC Runner of the Week after finishing eighth (270 runners) overall and second among NCAA Division II runners at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational. He placed third (265 runners) overall and first (162 runners) among non-NCAA Division I runners at the National Catholic Invitational.
Women's Cross Country: Terran Wertz, Lewis University
Terran Wertz, of Williamsburg, Iowa, is a Finance major at Lewis University. As a sophomore, she was the number one runner for the Flyers and led them in every meet. The Flyers finished eighth place at the GLVC Championship, where Wertz earned All-GLVC honors with her sixth place finish. She placed 55th at NCAA II Great Lakes Regionals, 35th (277 runners) overall and fourth (170 runners) among non-NCAA Division I runners at the National Catholic Invitational, 29th (209 runners) at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, 14th (216 runners) at the Border War Invitational, and eighth (75 runners) at the North Central College Invitational. Wertz has been named to the Lewis University Dean's List.
Women's Golf: Bianca Hutton, Northern Kentucky University
Bianca Hutton, of Helsinki, Finland, is a junior at Northern Kentucky University where she majors in International Studies with a minor in Marketing. In the spring of 2005, Hutton placed second at NCAA East Regionals and tied for 23rd at the NCAA II National Championship. She also placed second at the Krump Kup, first at the UC Invitational, tied for 11th at the Bellarmine Invitational, tied for fourth at the NKU Spring Fling, 22nd at Kiawah Island Tournament, and 40th at the Florida Southern Invitational. In the fall of 2005, the Norse finished fourth at the GLVC Championship, where Hutton tied for sixth place individually. Also during the fall, she placed tied for 11th at the Ferris State Invitational, 17th at the Grand Valley State Invitational and 13th at the Screaming Eagle Classic. For her performance on the course, Hutton earned All-GLVC and East All-Region honors. Her academic honors and accomplishments include being named NKU All-Academic, GLVC All-Academic, and National Golf Coaches Association Academic All-American.
Men's Soccer: Nick Frederickson, Quincy University
Nick Frederickson, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, was a senior back at Quincy University where he majors in Biological Sciences and Chemistry with a pre-med emphasis. The Hawks earned a 12-5-4 overall and 7-3-3 GLVC record. As the number four seed, Quincy advanced to the GLVC championship game where it lost to second-seeded Rockhurst 1-0 in two overtimes. In 2005, Frederickson started in all 21 games that he played in. He scored one goal for the season on a penalty kick in a 1-0 home win over Lewis. He assisted on two goals, the first on the team's first goal of the season in a 1-1 tie with Hannibal-LaGrange and the other came in a 1-0 home win over Kentucky Wesleyan. Frederickson attempted four shots on goal and helped anchor a defense which allowed only 21 goals the entire season to go with a shot-on-goal percentage of .494. Quincy ranked fifth in the GLVC in goals-against average with 0.95 per game. The team also posted 10 shutouts, tied for second in the GLVC. For his success and dedication on the field during the 2005 season, Frederickson was first team NSCAA Division II Great Lakes Region, second team All-GLVC and a tri-captain. His academic honors and accomplishments include second team NSCAA/adidas Scholar-Athlete All-America, first team North Central Region Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year, Quincy University's Student of the Month in October 2005, and being selected to Who's Who In American Colleges and Universities in 2005. Frederickson is a member of Quincy's chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a national collegiate honor society, and the Illinois chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, a national academic society for student-athletes. He also represents his team on the Quincy's chapter of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Women's Soccer: Kristen Votapek, Northern Kentucky University
Kristen Votapek, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was a senior forward at Northern Kentucky University where she majors in Education/Physical Education and minors in Health. The Norse ended the 2005 season with a 19-3 overall and 12-1 GLVC record, finishing first in GLVC team standings and winning the GLVC Championship. The team advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Great Lakes Region tournament. Votapek started all 22 games that she played in. She ranked first on her team in points (50), goals (16), assists (18), shots (79), and shots on goal (45). She was second on the team in game winning goals (4). In GLVC statistical rankings, Votapek finished first overall for shots on goal, shots per game, points, points per game, goals, goals per game, assists, and assists per game. She was fourth for game winning goals. In NCAA II category rankings, Votapek is tied for 18th in points per game (2.27) and fourth in assists per game (total 18, .82 per game). For her athletic success in the 2005 season, Votapek earned GLVC Player of the Week honors, GLVC Player of the Year, first team All-GLVC, first team Great Lakes Region, first team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All Great Lakes Region, and second team NCAA Division II All-American. Her academic honors and accomplishments include being named to NKU's Fall 2005 Dean's List, Winter 2005 Scholar's List, and All-Academic Team. She was also named to the GLVC All-Academic Team, ESPN the Magazine's second team Academic All-District IV, first team National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Scholar All-America, and is a NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship nominee.
Women's Tennis: Lindsey Fischer, University of Indianapolis
Lindsey Fischer, a native of Georgetown, Ind., is a sophomore at the University of Indianapolis where she majors in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry and Spanish. She was the number one position for singles and doubles for the Greyhounds. In the 2005 season, Fischer posted an 18-3 record in singles play and led her team to an 11-4 overall and 5-0 GLVC record. Two of her losses were to Division I opponents and the third was to the #31 player in the nation. The Hounds won the GLVC Championship for the second year in a row, earning a berth to the NCAA II Regional Tournament in May. Fischer was first team All-GLVC. For her dedication to her academics, she has been on the Dean's List three times and owns the highest GPA on her team.
Women's Volleyball: Kecia Jennings, Rockhurst University
Kecia Jennings, a native of Leavenworth, Kan., was a senior setter at Rockhurst University where she has a double-major in Biology and Spanish. As a team, the 2005 Hawks earned a 29-7 overall record and went 15-1 in the GLVC, owning the best record in the league and taking third at the conference tournament. Rockhurst won two matches at the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16. Jennings started all 36 matches that she played in and posted 1,538 assists (12.82 pg), 276 digs (2.30 pg) and 107 kills (0.89 pg) for the season. She finished first in the GLVC and 13th in NCAA II for assists per game. For her standout performance on the court, Jennings earned GLVC Player of the Week honors, All-Great Lakes Region, Daktronics first team All-Great Lakes Region, first team All-GLVC, NCAA Great Lakes Regional All-Tournament, AVCA third team All-American, and AVCA first team all Great Lakes Region. For her dedication in the classroom, she was named CoSIDA third team Academic All-American, CoSIDA first team Academic All-District, and made the Dean's Honor Roll.
