GLVC Names Winter/Spring Scholar Athletes for 2004-2005
Indianapolis, IN – Eight student-athletes have been selected as the 2004-2005 Winter/Spring Scholar Athletes of the Year for the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Conference selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon academic excellence, academic performance, and athletic accomplishments in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American standards, and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is done by each institution’s faculty/academic representative.

Men’s Basketball – TIM BAUERSACHS (SIU Edwardsville)
Bauersachs, a senior forward, graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in biology and secondary education and a final GPA of 3.307. During his senior season, Bauersachs became the first Cougar ever to earn First Team All-GLVC honors after helping his team to a 23-9 (15-5 GLVC) campaign. He broke the school record for career games played with 113 and averaged a team-leading 11.9 points per game in his senior season. He also led the team in field goal percentage, posting the best numbers for a Cougar in nearly 10 years. During his 113 games as a Cougar, Bauersachs managed to break into SIUE’s Top 20 leaders on the all-time scoring list and ended fifth all-time in rebounding. He is also among the all-time leaders in career assists. Off the court, Bauersachs was on the Dean’s List during the 2004 fall semester and served as a full-time student teacher while taking night classes in the spring. Bauersachs will attend the Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, to pursue becoming a minister.
Women’s Basketball – MARY MOSKAL (Lewis)
A sophomore forward from Cherry Valley, Illinois, Moskal holds a 3.946 cumulative GPA and is majoring in biology. The Flyers were 19-11 overall and finished second in the GLVC with a 15-5 league record. Moskal started all 30 games and led Lewis in scoring (16.2 ppg), rebounding (6.5 rpg), field goal percentage (53.4 %), and free throw percentage (79.4 %), while setting single season records for free throws made (201) and free throws attempted (253). Moskal also set Lewis’ single-game record for free throws attempted and tied the school record for free throws made when she went 15 of 22 from the line against Southern Indiana. Her efforts helped Lewis win its first ever GLVC tournament game, qualify for the NCAA Regional for the first time since 1998, and tie a school record for most GLVC victories. Moskal was named to the All-Great Lakes Region second team and All-GLVC second team. Academically, she was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V first team, the Deans’ List, and the Academic All-GLVC list. Moskal received Lewis’ Delahanty Award for academic excellence among student-athletes.
Baseball – MATT KEENER (Southern Indiana)
Keener, a senior outfielder and pitcher from Newburgh, Indiana, graduated with a Business/ Marketing degree and 4.00 cumulative GPA. During the 2005 season, the Screaming Eagles went 26-30 overall and 18-22 in the GLVC. Keener was named to the All-GLVC First Team as a utility player after leading the Screaming Eagles with a .381 batting average, 38 RBIs, four home runs, and 14 doubles. He also led USI with a 2.97 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) on the mound and posted a 1.000 fielding percentage despite seeing action as a right fielder, first baseman, and pitcher. Keener became the first USI baseball player to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Team a year ago and has been named Academic All-District V each of the last two years. Keener has been named All-GLVC each of the last three years and is a four-time Academic All-GLVC honoree. He was the 2005 recipient of the prestigious GLVC Richard F. Scharf Paragon award, given annually to the league’s top female and male student-athlete.
Men’s Golf – Jason Fryia (Bellarmine)
The senior from Bowling Green, Kentucky graduated Cum Laude in Business Administration with a 3.64 cumulative GPA. After winning the team league title in 2004, Fryia helped the Knights place fifth at the 2005 GLVC Championship by tying for sixth individually. He was a Great Lakes Super-Regional individual participant and tied for 7th place. Fryia held the #1 position on the team and maintained a stroke average of 74.82. Fryia was named to the GLVC All-Conference team in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and was named Great Lakes All-Region in 2005. His other awards and honors include the Cleveland Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar Award in 2004 and 2005, GLVC All-Academic from 2002-05, Bellarmine’s Most Valuable Player in 2005, the Coaches Award in 2002, the Alumni Association Silver Knight Award, and the Loftus Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence in 2005. Fryia was named Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 2004 and was a member of Chi Alpha Sigma National College Honor Society in 2004.
Softball – ROBIN MARTZ (Lewis)
Martz, a junior outfielder from Lanark, Illinois, was recently named the 2005 GLVC Softball Player of the Year. An accounting major, Martz maintains a 3.903 cumulative GPA and held a 4.0 during the spring. The Flyers were 29-22 overall and fourth place in the GLVC with a 12-8 league record. Martz started all 51 games and was named First Team All-America for the second straight year. Martz was also named to the All-Great Lakes Region first team in 2005 and the All-GLVC first team in 2004 and 2005. She batted .480 with 53 runs, 38 stolen bases, 82 hits and 22 RBI, while leading the GLVC in batting average, runs, stolen bases, hits and on-base percentage. Martz broke Lewis' single-season records in four categories--batting average, runs, hits and stolen bases, and also had the second-highest on-base percentage (.511) and fourth-best slugging percentage (.591) in school history. Martz was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team, All-District V first team, and the Deans’ List. She received the Lewis’ Delahanty Award for academic excellence among student-athletes and was named on the Academic All-GLVC list.
Men’s Tennis - OLIVER MARINKOVIC (Northern Kentucky)
A Gothenburg, Sweden native, Marinkovic is a junior majoring in management with a business administration minor. He has a 3.391 cumulative GPA, and helped the Norse to a 2nd place finish in GLVC regular-season play with an 11-8 overall record (7-1 GLVC) in 2005. The Norse finished in third place at the 2005 GLVC Championship. Marinkovic played #1 singles/doubles and was named GLVC All-Conference in both 2004 and 2005. During his sophomore season, the Norse finished 18-5 overall, while going 8-0 in the GLVC. NKU took first place in the GLVC in 2004 and made an NCAA tournament appearance, during which Marinkovic played #2 singles/doubles. Academically, Marinkovic was named to the GLVC All-Academic List in 2004 and 2005, was on the NKU All-Academic Team in 2004 and 2005, and was named to the Dean’s List in the fall of 2003.
Men’s Track & Field – MARK ZILCH (Lewis)
Zilch, a senior pole vaulter from Bloomingdale, Illinois, graduated in May after majoring in biology with a 3.714 cumulative GPA. Zilch’s athletic efforts helped the Flyers win the 2005 GLVC Indoor title, finish second at the Outdoor championship, and place 12th at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Individually, Zilch won the NCAA Indoor National Championship and finished fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Nationals, giving him eight All-America awards (four indoor, four outdoor) for his career at Lewis. The team captain was the 2005 GLVC Indoor and Outdoor champion in the pole vault, and his indoor school-record 18-0˝ qualified him for the U.S. Indoor Nationals. Academically, Zilch is a 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection, a seven-time member of the Dean’s List, and a four-time recipient of Lewis’ Delahanty Award for academic excellence among student-athletes. Recently, he was the recipient of the 2005 Delahanty Senior Student Athlete Award for having the highest GPA among graduating senior student athletes, and was named to the Academic All-GLVC list for the fourth time. Zilch was a member of Lewis’ Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Catholic Honor Society.
Women’s Track & Field – MARY WITTE (SIU Edwardsville)
The Normal, Illinois, native graduated from SIUE in May after majoring in Speech Pathology with a psychology minor. Witte held a cumulative GPA of 3.855, and was named the Cougar Cadre female captain, an award given to the SIUE student-athlete who not only demonstrates academic and athletic success but also promotes sportsmanship, encourages perseverance and displays self-discipline. Witte was named All-GLVC in track & field in 2002, 2003, and 2004, and was named “GLVC Freshman of the Year” at the 2002 Indoor Championship. Witte is a part of the record-holding distance medley relay and 3200-meter relay teams. As a 2004 national qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Witte placed 12th at the NCAA national championship meet, setting a school-record time of 11:09.98. Witte was a Chancellor’s Scholar and earned Dean’s list honors every semester. She has been conducting research on the speech of persons with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease throughout her senior year, and was selected to present her research at the Illinois Speech–Language & Hearing Association convention in February of 2005. Witte is also involved in numerous community service projects, and plans to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree in speech-language pathology.
