GLVC Names Fall Scholar Athletes for 2004
Indianapolis, IN – Seven student-athletes have been selected as the 2004 Fall Scholar Athletes of the Year for the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). The Conference selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon academic excellence, academic performance, and athletic accomplishments in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American standards, and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is done by each institution’s faculty/academic representative.

Men’s Cross Country - JESSE DAVIS (Southern Indiana)
Davis, a junior from Bloomington, Indiana, is a social science major with a 3.535 cumulative GPA and 3.750 fall GPA. The Screaming Eagles finished second at the 2004 Fall GLVC Championships. Individually, Davis finished second at the meet and was USI’s top runner in three of his last four races. He earned All-GLVC honors for the second straight season, while recording top-five finishes in four competitions this season, including a fourth-place finish at the University of Evansville Division I Invitational. Davis finished third in the Little State competition at the Indiana Intercollegiate and is a two-time Academic All-GLVC performer. All together, Davis is a four-time All-GLVC performer in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.
Women’s Cross Country - HEATHER COOKSEY (Southern Indiana)
A junior from Brownsburg, Indiana, Cooksey maintained a 3.604 cumulative GPA and earned a 3.375 fall GPA while majoring in business administration. Her efforts on the course helped the Screaming Eagles to a second-place team finish at the 2004 GLVC Championships. Cooksey won the GLVC Individual Championship, the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional Individual Championship, and earned All-America honors after finishing 17th at the NCAA II Championships. She was named the Great Lakes Region “Female Athlete of the Year” for cross country, and earned All-GLVC honors for the third straight season and All-Region honors for the second straight season. Cooksey won five individual titles and finished in the top five in seven of the eight races she competed in. She is a combined six-time All-American in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, and was named both the GLVC Scholar Athlete and Female Athlete of the Year for track and field as a sophomore. She is a four-time Academic All-GLVC performer and has won a school-record 26 races while holding 15 school records in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.
Women’s Golf - KIM KEYER-SCOTT (Northern Kentucky)
The Cincinnati native is a senior criminal justice major with a 3.719 cumulative GPA and 3.750 fall GPA. Her efforts in the fall helped the Norse to their second conference title in three years. Individually, she tied for second at the 2004 GLVC Tournament and finished third at the Lenior Ryhne Invitational. In 2003, she placed first at the conference tournament, and was named GLVC All-Conference and GLVC Player of the Year. She went on to finish third at the NCAA East Regional and 15th at NCAA National tournament. Also during 2003, Keyer-Scott was a medalist at the Ferris State Invitational, finished fourth at the Grand Valley State Invitational, and finished sixth at the University of Southern Indiana Invitational. The 2002 team won their first GLVC Championship in program history, and went on to be NCAA East Regional champions and NCAA National Tournament participants. She was named GLVC Freshman of the Year in 2001, and has been named All-GLVC four times and Academic All-GLVC three times.
Men’s Soccer - RILEY MEWES (UW-Parkside)
Mewes, a senior from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, was a double major in history and international relations with a 3.714 cumulative GPA and 3.835 fall GPA. As a team, the Rangers were 2004 NCAA II regional finalists. Despite being a defender, Mewes scored three goals including one game-winner in the fall. He was named a 2004 NCAA All-American and All-GLVC and All-Region in both 2003 and 2004. During Mewes’ career, UW-Parkside posted a 49-23-5 record, including 13-4-3 in 2004. The Rangers finished second in the GLVC standings in 2004 with a 7-1-2 league mark. Mewes missed two seasons due to injury, yet returned to start every match in each of the last three seasons. He was a three-time team captain, the 2004 team MVP, and 2002 and 2003 UWP Defensive Player of the Year. Mewes was also named Defensive MVP of the 2004 Puma Classic tournament. He has been named GLVC All-Academic team each year, and won the top academic award in both of his majors. Mewes graduated in December of 2004 and serves as a mentor for youth soccer players in the UWP Adopt-A-Ranger program.
Women’s Soccer - STEFANIE STRAUSS (UW-Parkside)
The Racine, Wisconsin, senior is majoring in pre-med with a 3.98 cumulative GPA and 4.0 fall GPA. In 2004, the Rangers went 18-2 overall and 9-1 in the GLVC. Strauss spearheaded a Ranger squad which posted the lowest goals-against average in the nation this year (0.30). She started all 20 games as a defender, yet still had two assists. She became the program’s first NCAA All-American, and was also named All-Region and All-GLVC. Strauss was the 2004 GLVC Player of the Year and a NSCAA Academic All-American selection. She was part of a senior class which posted a 58-9-8 career record, won two GLVC championships and qualified for the NCAA tournament.
Women’s Tennis - ASHLEY REES (Southern Indiana)
A junior from Vincennes, Indiana, Rees is a business management major with a 3.652 cumulative GPA and 3.625 fall GPA. During the fall season in 2004, she helped the Screaming Eagles to a 10-3 overall record and 7-2 GLVC Record. The team placed second at the GLVC Tournament and was third in GLVC regular season standings. Rees played #2 in singles and was part of the #1 team in doubles. She was named All-GLVC for the third straight year, and tied for third on the team with 10 wins during the fall season. She was 7-1 against the GLVC during the 2004 conference campaign and combined with Sara Wilhoite and Audra Bartelt to post a 12-5 doubles record (8-1 GLVC). In 2003-04, Rees was named All-GLVC and Academic All-GLVC for the second straight season and ranked second on the team in singles victories with a 12-10 record. She was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year in 2002-03, and was also All-GLVC, and Academic All-GLVC as a freshman. That year, she led the team in singles victories with a 16-5 record (7-0 GLVC) while posting an 11-1 record at number two singles.
Volleyball - WHITNEY BOLING (University of Indianapolis)
The Elkhart, Indiana, native is a junior outside hitter majoring in psychology with a 3.823 cumulative GPA and 3.857 fall semester GPA. As a team, the 2004 Greyhounds posted a 23-13 overall record and went 12-4 in the GLVC. She was named to the All-GLVC second-team in 2003 and 2004, and was eighth in points (4.09) and ninth in kills (3.47) in the 2004 GLVC final statistics. She recorded 25 double-digit kill matches in 2004 and had 10 double-doubles in kills and digs. Boling had three matches with at least 20 kills, including a season-high 23 against both Northern Kentucky and Western New Mexico. During her sophomore season, Boling helped lead the team to it’s first-ever GLVC championship and NCAA II Tournament berth in 2003 and a school-record 29 wins. She was named GLVC "Player of the Week" after leading the Hounds to a five-game win over regionally-ranked NKU with a career-high 33 kills and a .464 hitting percentage. Overall, the 2003 team finished 12th in NCAA II in blocks per game (2.98) and 28th in hitting percentage (.263). She had 503 kills in 2003, reaching double digits in 29 of 39 matches. She also had seven double-doubles in kills and digs, recording a career-high 26 digs against Lewis. She is a three-year letterwinner and two-time Academic All-GLVC.
