SCHOLAR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) is pleased to announce its selection of the Scholar Athletes of the Year for the 2003 fall sports season! The Conference selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year for that sport. This award is based upon academic excellence, academic performance, and athletic accomplishments in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets the Academic All-American standards, and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.

The award winners for the 2003 fall sports are:

Women’s Cross Country: BREANNE STEFFENS (SIU EDWARDSVILLE)
Steffens, a senior from Moline, IL, is majoring in psychology with a sociology minor. She has a 3.537 overall GPA and maintained a 3.75 over the fall. She is SIUE’s first All-American in cross-country, and was ranked 26th nationally. At the 2003 GLVC Championships, Steffens placed first, improving fifteen places from her finish the previous year. She received All-Region honors after placing second at the regional meet in Michigan, and helped her fellow Cougar teammates to a second place GLVC Championships finish and seventh place at regionals. Steffens holds the school record in the 6000m and 5000m, and was a part of the 4 x 800 record-setting team in 2002. She has received Academic All-GLVC honors in both cross country and track, and was an All-American Scholar (U.S. Achievement Academy) in 2002 and 2003. Steffens has made the Dean’s List four times, and is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honors Society for Student-Athletes and the Psychology Student Association.

Men’s Cross Country: PATRICK HAMILTON (UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS)
Hamilton, a native of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, was a marketing major as an undergrad (3.940 overall GPA) and is now working toward his MBA. He was the #4 runner for the Greyhounds, who ended with a 90-19 record. A two-year letterman, Hamilton helped the team to an eighth-place finish in the 20-team NCAA II Great Lakes Cross Country Regional by finishing 37th out of 136 runners. He combined with teammate John Poray to win the Wabash Hokum-Karem race by 12 seconds in a field of 40 pairs, leading UIndy to the team title. Hamilton finished 26th of 89 competitors at the 2003 GLVC Meet and placed 39th among 213 runners at the Border States Invitational. At the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, he helped UIndy finish fourth of 34 teams by finishing 102nd in a field of 514 entrants. Hamilton helped the Greyhounds finish second in a 17-team field at the Indiana Little State Meet by finishing 29th of 133 runners and assisted the team in beating five Division I teams (including Purdue) at the Great American Legends Meet with a 42nd-place effort among 87 runners. Hamilton earned Dean's List honors both undergraduate semesters and maintained a 3.800 GPA while working toward his MBA this fall.

Women’s Golf: Kim KEYER-SCOTT (NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY)
Keyer-Scott is a junior from Cincinnati, OH who is double-majoring in Psychology and Criminal Justice. She has a 3.708 cum GPA and maintained a 4.00 GPA last fall. As a team, the Norse finished fourth in the 2003 GLVC championship and won their first-ever title in 2002. The team was 2002 NCAA East Regional champions and participated in the 2002 NCAA National tournament Keyer-Scott was named GLVC Freshman of the Year and NGCA Division II Softspikes National Freshman of the Year in 2001, and was GVLC All-Conference in 2001-03. She placed first at the 2003 GLVC Championship after finishing fourth in 2002 and second in 2001. She was named 2003 GLVC Player of the Year and was a member of the NGCA Division II All-American 1st team. In the 2003- 04 national rankings, Keyer-Scott held the #2 position among individuals. She was a medalist in the 2002 and 2003 Ferris State Invitational, the 2001-02 Bluegrass Fall Classic, and the 2002-03 Anderson College Invitational. Keyer-Scott finished 3rd in the 2003 NCAA East Regional and 15th in the 2003 NCAA National tournament. She earned GLVC All-Academic honors in 2001 and 2002 and has be named to the NKU/Firstar Bank All-Academic Team every year since 2002.

Women’s Soccer: JENNA SILVERMAN (UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS)
Silverman is a senior forward from Greenwood, IN, majoring in English. She has a 3.821 cum GPA and earned a 3.880 during the fall semester. Silverman helped the Greyhounds to a team record of 11-5-3 (6-2-2 GLVC) in 2003. She started all 19 games and had 18 goals, 5 assists, 41 points, and 5 game-winning goals during the season. Silverman was named the 2003 GLVC "Player of the Year" after leading the conference in goals (18) and points (41). She set school records in both categories as well and led the team to a #5 region ranking and a trip to the GLVC semi-finals. Overall, Silverman finished 20th in NCAA II in goals per game (0.95) and 25th in points per game (2.16). She scored three goals (including the game-winner) vs. Quincy in the 2003 GLVC Tournament quarter-final. During a 4-3 win at regionally-ranked Ferris State, Silverman had a career-high seven points, and scored both the game-tying goal with one second left and the game-winner in overtime. She is a two-time GLVC "Player of the Week" who had six multi-goal matches this season. She was named to the 2002 All-GLVC second team after finishing fifth in scoring (21) and sixth in goals (8) among the conference, and was also Academic All-GLVC in 2003. Silverman made the Verizon Academic All-District second team in 2003 and graduated in December after recording semester GPA's over 3.70 in all three semesters at Indianapolis.

Men’s Soccer: DUNCAN BRAY (UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN INDIANA)
Bray is a senior from Shetland, Scotland, majoring in physical education. He has a cum GPA of 3.735 and maintained a 3.535 over the fall semester. As a team, Southern Indiana finished 11-7-1 overall and 8-2-0 in GLVC conference play and tied for third in the 2003 GLVC Tournament. Bray was named to the first team NSCAA/adidas All-American and Scholar All-American teams and also earned NSCAA first team All-Region and first team All-GLVC honor. He led the Eagles with 19 points on six goals and seven assists and posted two game winning goals. In 2002, Bray was named first-team NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-American and second-team Verizon Academic All-American while also earning NSCAA first-team All-Region and first-team All-GLVC honors. During his junior season, he was voted the 2002 USI/Integra Bank Male Student Athlete of the Year and ranked first on the team in scoring and second in the GLVC with 30 points on nine goals and a team-leading 12 assists. Those 12 assists were ranked 16th nationally and first in the GLVC in 2002. Bray tied a USI single-game record in 2002 with four assists in the win over Kentucky Wesleyan College and set a career-high in goals with three in USI's victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Women’s Tennis: GRACE WILHOITE (UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS)
Wilhoite, of Connersville, IN is a senior elementary education major with a minor in special education/learning disability teaching. She has a 3.989 cum GPA and recorded a 4.00 during the fall semester. For the Greyhounds, she played #1 singles and #1 doubles. The team finished with an overall record of 12-5 and went 7-2 in the GLVC. Wilhoite went 15-4 at both #1 singles and #1 doubles to finish the season with a 30-8 overall record. She was named 2002-03 GLVC "Player of the Year" and earned All-GLVC honors for the second straight time in the fall. Wilhoite was ranked 13th in singles and sixth in doubles in the 2003 ITA NCAA II Great Lakes Region Fall Rankings. She has a two-year UIndy record of 70-22, going 34-11 in singles and 36-11 in doubles. During the 2002-03 season, Wilhoite led the team to a school-record 18 wins, the GLVC title, a national ranking (#40), and the NCAA Tournament. Individually she was 19-7 in singles and 21-7 in doubles for a 40-14 overall record in 2002-03. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named Wilhoite the "Player to Watch" for the Great Lakes Region in 2002-03, and she advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2002 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mid-American Regional in doubles. Wilhoite has been named Academic All-GLVC, is an ITA "Scholar-Athlete" and has made the Dean's List in two of three semesters, recording a perfect 4.000 the past two semesters. She has also completed 19.5 hours in the UIndy "Volunteers in Service" program.

Volleyball: KRISTIN KORALEWSKI (NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY)
Koralewski, a native of Muskego, WI, is a junior majoring in sports business and minoring in business administration. She has a 3.50 cum GPA and earned a 3.60 during the fall. As a team, Northern Kentucky has a 69% winning percentage, going 48-22 the past two years. In the GLVC conference play, the team is 24 – 6 and has an 80% winning percentage. The Norse finished 2nd in 2002 and tied for 3rd in 2003 in the conference and were 2003 NCAA regional finalists. Koralewski was named GLVC All-Conference in 2002 and 2003, and was the 2003 GLVC Player of the Year. In 2003, she earned a spot on the NCAA Great Lakes All-Region Team and the AVCA First Team Great Lakes Region. Koralewski was a First Team All-American in 2003 and was named AVCA Honorable Mention Great Lakes in 2002. She started in 68 out of 69 matches the past two years and led the Norse in service aces with 46, service aces per game (.043), service percentage (.905), and digs per game (2.97) in 2002. In 2003, Koralewski led the team in kills per game (4.36), hitting percentage (.328), serving percentage (.871), and defensive digs per game (3.66), and was second on the team in service aces (55) and service aces per game (.41). Academically, Koralewski was named 2003 and 2004 NKU/Firstar All-Academic and GLVC All-Academic in 2002. She made the Dean’s List during the fall 2002 and spring 2003 semesters. Koralewski participated in the NKU Walk for Women’s athletic scholarships in 2001, 2002, 2003 and took part in NKU’s SAAC Kids Night Out in 2002 and 2003.
