SIUE Women's Cross Country Concerned With Injuries
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's cross country team has desires to compete at a high level at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regionals as well as the national championship, but injuries this year are a major challenge in reaching that goal.
"We are fighting old and new injuries. This year we will have a slow build-up before we are really competitive as a team," said assistant coach Eileen McAllister.
Until the team is healthy, SIUE will rely heavily on individual performances from returnees and incoming runners.
Last year's Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and All-GLVC runner Kayla Brown (Petersburg) is expected to return for a strong sophomore season.
In addition to Brown, Kelly Flounders (Homer Glen), Stacey Briggs (Argenta) Heather Hackel (Decatur), and Lindsey Mulvey (Rochester) all return for the 2007 campaign.
Freshman addition Maggie Krall (Bloomington) should have an immediate impact. McAllister said "She is definitely ready to go and we are going to look for her to come up big for us." Also joining the team will be Stephanie Briggs (Argenta)
The women cross country team kicks off its season on Sept. 7 at the Bradley Invite in Peoria.
