Freshman Leads the Way for Cougars
Kelly Flounders (Homer Glen) placed ninth in Great Lakes Valley Conference Cross Country Championship and was named the league’s Freshman of the Year on Saturday.
“Kelly did an outstanding job,” said SIUE cross country coach Eileen McAllister. “She went out from the beginning and hung on for a great race.”
Flounders ran the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 21.01 seconds for an All-GLVC performance. Her time was the third fastest time ever by an SIUE freshman and the 11th fastest time in school history.
As a team, SIUE placed sixth out of eight teams with 60. Senior Mary Witte (Norman) came in 20th with a time of 24:02.01.
Heather Zipparro (Mount Prospect) and Lee Ann Lomax (Georgetown) both had strong performances. Lomax came in 29th with a time of 24:28.06, and Zipparro finished 31st at 24:39.49.
“They both competed hard and both put best foot forward during the race,” said McAllister.
SIUE will play host to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships on Nov. 6 at the SIUE cross country course.
