Steffens Earns All-American Status
Cary, N.C. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville celebrated its first-ever cross country All-American Saturday when Breanne Steffens (Moline) crossed the finish line at position No. 26 at the NCAA Championships.
Steffens ran the 6,00-meter national championship course in 22 minutes, 21.2 seconds, the second fastest time in school history. Being among the top 30 Americans in the field of 189 runners, Steffens was given All-American status.
Meanwhile, Brian Taghon (East Moline) got his first taste of the national championships. The sophomore placed 96th in a time of 34:02.75 in the 10,000-meter race.
"It's been a very exciting trip," summed up SIUE Coach Darryl Frerker. "Breanne ran as well as she did at the regionals. And Brian was able to finish 96th out of 176 runners."
Adams State won both the men's and women's team titles. Celedino Rodriguez of Adams State won the men's race in 30:25.6. Chelsea Smith of BYU-Hawaii won the women's race in 20:33.9.
