Being Home Should Help Cougars

SIUE men’s and women’s cross country Coach Darryl Frerker is very optimistic about the future.
The Cougars co-host the Cougar-Bearcat Challenge this weekend on the SIUE cross country course. The women’s race begins at 10 a.m. with the men to follow at 10:45 a.m. Frerker said he expects his team to set personal records for the home course this weekend.
The overall field has not been finalized. McKendree College is the other host for the event.
Last Friday, the Cougars ran in the Panther Open at Eastern Illinois University. The women finished fourth and had one runner among the top 10. Carrie Carducci (Powell, Ohio) finished 10th, running the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 3.20 seconds. Amanda Bozue (Joliet) finished right behind Carducci but just out of the awards. Bozue was 11th in 19:03.95.
Coach Frerker is pleased with the women’s performance. However, due to an injury the team lacks a strong runner for the No. 5 position. “We are competing very well despite not having a fifth position runner. We also have had three different leaders in our three races. That, to me, is a great indication of a good conference meet.”
The Cougar men also finished fourth at the Panther Open. Frerker was impressed with the men’s performance.
“The men are finally starting to compete together,” said Frerker. The men in the top five positions all finished less than a minute apart. “Now all that needs to be done is to move that pack of runners up a bit before the conference meet to finish among the top three.”
The men have also seen different leaders in each of the races. “The positions keep changing,” said Frerker. “The only consistent runners are Tyler Krauss (Freeburg), Ryan Boyll (Normal), and John Sadowski (Springfield). This just shows me that it is all up to they guys on how we compete.”
