Cross Country Completes Season
The SIUE men and women’s cross country seasons have come to an end. Both Cougar teams placed 10th last weekend in the NCAA regional cross country meet held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.
“Things could have been and should have been a lot better,” said SIUE cross country coach Darryl Frerker. Frerker does not believe that his team ran up to expectations.
“The men’s team could have placed sixth or seventh if they had run they way they had been running all year,” said Frerker. Despite Frerker’s disappointment, he was pleased with the 12th place finish of Jason Olszowka (Lockport) in a time of 33 minutes, 2 seconds. Olszowka, a junior, has finished All-Region all of his three years at SIUE. Frerker also credits Nick Campbell (Charleston) with a good 10,000-meter race. Campbell finished 53rd at 34:31. The Cougars did improve from their 13th place finish last year.
The SIUE women’s team did not run as expected by Frerker either. SIUE improved from their 14th place finish in last year’s meet, but did still not run the 6,000-meter course as expected. Breanne Steffens (Moline) improved greatly from her performance last year, placing 53rd with a time of 24:16. Frerker was also pleased with the performance of freshman Mary Witte (Normal), and senior Chenoa Glenn (Ferguson, Mo.). “Glenn has been a sprinter on the track team so for her to turn around and do the distance she did well,” said Frerker.
