Cross Country Set for Regionals
Only the top two men’s teams and the top three women’s teams advance to the NCAA Championships so SIUE must be at its finest at Saturday’s NCAA regional championships in Kenosha, Wis.
“I’m looking for an overall improvement out of what we had at the GLVC meet and at last year’s regional,” said Coach Darryl Frerker of his men’s team. “How much we improve depends on how focused we are.”
Frerker also has the same line of reasoning for the women’s team.
“We can finish high running what we’re capable of running,” he said.
Frerker said the regional course at Wisconsin-Parkside is similar to what the Cougars faced at the GLVC Championships in Louisville, Ky. The course features one large hill with a handful of smaller hills. The terrain is a little more difficult than what his Cougars practice on, noted Frerker.
SIUE is coming off the GLVC Championships. Jason Olszowka (Lockport) and Breanne Steffens (Moline) earned All-Conference honors in their respectice races.
Olszowka, a junior, earned All-Conference honors for the second time after posting a 10,000-meter time of 33 minutes, 31.7 seconds. As a team, SIUE placed fifth out of eight teams.
Steffens, a sophomore, placed sixth in a time of 23:25.6 in the 6,000-meter race. As a team, the SIUE women’s finished fourth out of eight teams.
