Frerker Sees Progression
for Runner-Up Runners
The SIUE men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Champaign for the Illinois Invitational on Friday evening.
         The women’s 5,000-meter run begins at 5 p.m. and is followed by the men’s 8,000-meter run at 5:30 p.m.
Both squads finished in second place last weekend at the Washington University Invitational.
Coach Darryl Frerker said he happy with the teams finishes, but he knows there’s still work to be done.
“We are not where we want to be yet, but we have a very young squad progressing well and working hard.”
Junior Jason Olszowka (Lockport) lead the men’s side with a third-place finish at a time of 26 minutes, 16 seconds, in the 8,000-meter event. “Jason ran a very strong and smart race. He was consistent with his mile times throughout.”
Freshman Tyler Krauss (Freeburg) was the second Cougar across the finish line. He finished ninth with a time of 26:46. “Tyler came on a lot stronger in this competition. I think he will continue to get faster.”
Rounding out SIUE’s top five finishes are freshman Steve McNamer (Charleston) – 27:01, junior Robert Old (Hendersonville, Tenn.) – 27:30 and freshman Dustin Gentry (Charleston) – 27:31.
On the women’s side, freshman Carrie Carducci (Powell, Ohio) led the way with a second-place showing at a time of 18:33.
The top six finishers for the Cougars were all freshmen and finished within one minute, 16 seconds of each other. Carducci was followed by Natalie Kocher (Olney) – 19:34, April Greenwood (Mt. Vernon) – 19:35, Breanne Steffans (Moline) – 19:38, LeAnn Lomax (Georgetown) – 19:41 and Maria Ewersmann (St. Paul, Mo.) – 19:49.
