Women's Cross Country Looks to Seniors for Strength (EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) When Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's cross country Coach Darryl Frerker looks at his team, he sees potential. Three seniors head the list of returnees, giving the Cougars hope for a successful season. The team is, according to Frerker, already ahead of its pace from a year ago. "During a practice run, the averaged time of our top five came in faster than last year," said Frerker. "As a group, we're a good 30 seconds faster on average." To keep that pace up for the whole season, Frerker looks to seniors Bridget Fitzpatrick (Florissant, Mo.), Ann Miklovic (St. Louis, Mo.), and Lisa Ribes (Benld) to be among the team's top five. Add sophomore Amanda Bozue (Joliet) to the mix, and the Cougars appear to have four of its top five runners. The next question stands as to which newcomer can fill the final position in the top five. Alissa Alberts (Lincoln), Jill Irlam (Virden) and Colleen Schroeder (Jerseyville) have been at SIUE but begin their first year of eligibility in cross country. "They're both distance runners who are jumping into the cross country arena," said Frerker. The rest of the roster contains traditional freshmen. Stephanie Mullen (Girard) appears ready to be among the team's top five. The Cougars also look to Penny Simons (Minier) and Shelly Friberg (Springfield, Mo.) for depth. The Cougars' first action of the season is Saturday, Sept. 4, when the team plays host for the SIUE Open at the SIUE cross country course. -siue-
