October 16, 2006 SIUE Prepares for the GLVC Championships           The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's cross country team is gearing up for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.           SIUE will be the host for the 2006 GLVC Championships. The men's 8,000-meter race will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the Cougar Cross Country Course.           "It is going to be really tough and really competitive," said SIUE Assistant Coach Eileen McAllister.           MacAllister added that the Cougars have not put a strong race together this season because with all of the team injuries she has been forced to change the top five runners every week.           With the Border Wars under their belt, the Cougars should be ready for the GLVC Championships.           "Border Wars was a little preview to find out what we need to do since it was on the same course and many of the same teams will be there," said McAllister.           The strongest two runners for the Cougars this season have been Erik Steffens (Moline) and Justin Crain (McLeansboro), who finished 22nd and 39th respectively at Border Wars.           "They have both been consistent runners and have consistently improved all season," said McAllister.                     -siue cougars-
