October 25, 2004 Confidence Lifts Boyll’s Victory It was confidence in being the lead runner that helped Ryan Boyll (Normal) win the Great Lakes Valley Conference Cross Country Championship in Alexandria, Ky., over the weekend, becoming the first runner in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville history to win the event. Boyll’s time of 25 minutes, 36.58 seconds in 8,000-meter defeated his nearest competitor by just less than 10 seconds. “I was really proud of him,” said SIUE cross country coach Eileen McAllister. “He felt confident that it was his race, and he could lead it the whole way.” The Cougars finished the event in fourth place with a score of 98 behind Lewis, Southern Indiana, and Wisconsin Parkside. SIUE’s Brian Taghon (East Moline) came in at seventh place with a time of 26:10.05 earning All-GLVC honors. “He felt like it was under his potential, but I thought that he ran well,” said McAllister. McAllister also said that freshman Brian Getz (East Moline) did an excellent job for the Cougars finishing in 39th with a time of 27:42.32. SIUE will play host to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships on Nov. 6 at the SIUE cross country course. -siue cougars- |
