SIUE Cross Country Looks
To Youth for Progress
Coach Darryl Frerker is perhaps reacting to last season's last-place
finish in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.
With a tongue-in-cheek grin, Frerker knows his team has nowhere to go but
up from last season. He'll see some immediate impact with the return of
sophomore redshirt Jason Olszowka (Lockport), who finished in the top 10
at the GLVC Championships two seasons ago. He'll be joined as a
frontrunner by junior transfer Robert Old (Hendersonville, Tenn.).
The Cougars will rely on sophomore returners Dustin Gentry (Charleston),
Shawn Brundies (Hardin) and Darren Dinkelman (Nashville) to help lead the
next tier. Frerker also has 12 freshman on the roster eager to break into
the Cougar elite.
Frerker said two freshmen also have been running well in preseason
workouts and should provide a boost. "Tyler Krauss (Freeburg) and Matt
Shearer (Edwardsville) look to make an impact on our top five," said
Frerker.
