SIUE Men's Cross Country Need to Develop Its Youth
(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) There's a great deal of unshaped talent on
the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's cross country team. At
least, that's what Coach Darryl Frerker is heading into the 1999 season
believing.
His top two runners are sophomore Lucas Standerfer (Sullivan) and
sophomore Andrew Warnsing (Sullivan). "They're coming into the season in
shape and ready," said Frerker.
Yet with the virtual lack of inexperience as the lead runners,
Frerker has to work on the development of his whole roster if the Cougars
prove to be successful this season.
After Standerfer and Warnsing, Frerker hopes to develop on senior
Paul Parson (Imperial, Mo.) and sophomore Shawn Brundies (Hardin).
From there, the Cougars have junior walk-on Kevin Wiedman
(Effingham) and five freshmen. Frerker said the three weeks between the
team's first workout and the first meet on Saturday, Sept. 4, at the SIUE
Open appear to be the most important time for development.
"Within the next three weeks, they'll weed themselves out," said
Frerker.
Those five freshmen are Andrew Anzalone (St. Peters, Mo.), Helaman
Castillo (St. Rose), Darren Dinkelman (Nashville), Dustin Gentry
(Charleston), and Gawain Piper (Ewing). Frerker said Castillo is the one
who has stepped out of the pack early. "Helaman fared well in our timed
effort to start the season," Frerker said.
