Cougars Sign Keeler
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team has signed Brett Keeler (Munster, Ind.) to a national letter of intent to play for the Cougars starting with the 2009 season.
As a third baseman for Munster High School last season, Keeler was honorable mention All-State, first team All-Conference, and first team All-Area. This year, Keeler made the switch to calling the games for the Mustangs as their starting catcher.
The Cougar coaching staff is optimistic about the offensive and defensive threat Keeler will bring to the team next season as the program transitions to NCAA Division I status.
"Brett has the ability to play both positions at the collegiate level. His best asset though is his bat. He has a great swing with a quick bat," said SIUE associate head coach Tony Stoecklin.
In 59 plate appearances this season, Keeler has a .373 batting average to go a long with 22 hits, 29 runs batted in, and nine home runs.
The 2008 season was SIUE's last as NCAA Division II institution.
