Cougar Baseball Signs Four for 2009 Season
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team has added Mitch Matecki (Millstadt), Trevor Zugmaier (St. Peters, Mo.), Spencer Patton (Kinmundy), and Josh Malin (Florissant, Mo.) for the 2009 season.
Matecki, a standout shortstop for Belleville West High School, has the opportunity to come in and play right away.
"Mitch is our first Division I recruit, and we are excited about him being a part of the program. He has a great opportunity to step in and play right away for us," said associate head coach Tony Stoecklin.
Trevor Zugmaier, a left-handed pitcher, will be transferring from St. Charles Community College.
For Stoecklin, Zugmaier is another newcomer that has the potential to come in right way and contribute. "He has great stuff. His fastball probably has the most life on it then I have seen in a while."
Patton, a right-handed pitcher, is a bit of deja vu for the Cougars. Originally recruited out of high school, he instead chose to attend Parkland Community College.
"His mound presence should be a real asset to the pitching staff. We are happy to finally get him here," said Stoecklin.
Malin, who plays for St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, completes this round of signings for the Cougars. He is a rangy right-handed pitcher the Cougar staff expects to develop into a dominating college pitcher.
"He is is a big, tall, and lanky pitcher with great pitches. As he continues to physically mature, his productivity should should increase," Stoecklin said of Malin
