June 6, 2007 SIUE Baseball Signs Six for 2008 Season EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Coming off consecutive NCAA Division II Championships, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team has signed six newcomers for the 2008 season. SIUE Coach Gary Collins and Assistant Coach Tony Stoecklin noted that all six players are junior college transfers, will be coming to SIUE as juniors and will be expected to step in immediately next season. The list of new players includes Adam Eggemeyer (Steeleville), Chilos Norris (Springfield, Ohio), Ryan Schiever (Lockport), Tim Stunkel (Edwardsville), Nathan Pfleger (Decatur), and Luke Bahr (Red Bud). Eggemeyer is a 6-foot-4-inch center fielder from John A. Logan College. He batted .389 this past season with 19 doubles, six triples, four home runs and 53 runs batted in. "I expect Adam to step into the middle of the lineup and be a big producer," said Stoecklin. Norris, a shortstop last season for Lewis and Clark Community College, batted .390 last season. He added four doubles, five triples, 22 RBIs and a perfect 17 of 17 in stolen bases for the Trailblazers. "He's a scrappy leadoff hitter," said Stoecklin. "He has good baserunning ability, and we expect him to step in at second base." Schiever batted .452 at Triton College. The right-handed hitting catcher ripped 11 doubles and drobe in 46 runs this past season. "Ryan is going to come in and spend a lot of time behind the plate," Stoecklin said. "He's a pretty well-rounded catcher." Stunkel also played at Lewis and Clark. The right-handed pitcher tossed 47 innings for the Trailblazers and posted a 5-2 record with a 4.20 earned run average. Stunkel struck out 23 batters and walked just seven last season. "He throws a lot of strikes. I think he has an excellent opportunity to pitch a lot of innings for us," said Stoecklin. Pfleger is a left-handed pitcher who earned a 6-4 record for Springfield College this past season. He fanned 50 batters in 57 innings and finished with a 4.50 ERA. "He's got some good stuff on the mound. If he throws strikes at this level, he will have a lot of success," said Stoecklin. Bahr, a right-handed utility player, can easily play a number of positions for the Cougars next season. He batted .333 with eight doubles, six home runs and 37 runs batted in for St. Louis Community College at Forest Park this past season. "He has some pop in his bat. He could be a valuable player who can fill a number of roles on defense," said Stoecklin. SIUE baseball is coming off its second straight NCAA Tournament. The Cougars finished the 2007 season with a 37-17 record, boasting the second lowest earned run average in the country with a team ERA of 2.51. -siue cougars- |
