April 20, 2008 SIUE Splits With Quincy QUINCY, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball kept its slim lead for second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division with a Sunday split at Quincy. SIUE won game one 8-3 and then fell in the nightcap 5-4. The Cougars are 19-20 overall but hold a one-game lead over Quincy with a 13-11 record in league play. SIUE has eight games left to play in the GLVC regular season with four games at home against Saint Joseph's next weekend and four against Missouri S&T the following weekend. In game one Sunday, SIUE rolled up a quick 7-0 lead after three innings. Ben Bartley added the eighth run in the sixth with a solo home run. Andrew Beatty collected his fourth win of the season in the seven-inning contest. He gave up just four hits and struck out two for the Cougars. SIUE held a 4-2 lead in game two going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Joe Palumbo was the hero for Quincy, blasting a three-run, walkoff home run with two outs off SIUE hurler Mitchell Fairley. The Cougars now turn their attention to Wednesday's non-conference matchup against McKendree. Game time is 7 p.m. at SimmonsCooper Complex. -siue cougars- |
