Three-Run Ninth Lifts Cougars to Sweep
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- It took a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to claim a doubleheader sweep over Drury Saturday in college baseball at SimmonsCooper Complex
SIUE, now 18-15 overall, strengthened its spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division. The Cougars are in 12-7 overall in the GLVC and holds second place behind Southern Indiana. Drury fell to 17-16 overall and 7-9 in the GLVC.
The Cougars needed some late-game heroics. Pinch hitter Ryan Wiggs got it started with one out in the ninth on a single through the left side of the infield.
Cory Bunner's single got Drury starter Chris Marston taken out of the game with a 5-2 lead. Stephen Bloss came out of the bullpen to replace Marston, who struck out six in 8 1/3 innings.
Adam Eggemeyer followed with a single to right. Wiggs made the turn past third, heading to score and slipped. Wiggs had to retreat back to third to avoid a tag at the plate. Meanwhile, Bunner headed to third on Eggemeyer's hit and was tagged out by Drury as both Wiggs and Bunner stood together at third.
With two outs, Ben Bartley drew a walk to load the bases. Bloss was then replaced by Sam Pirtle, who was working for his fourth save of the season.
Pirtle walked SIUE's Michael Hopkins and then gave up a single up the middle from Daniel Thomson as the Cougars finished off the rally.
Mitchell Fairley claimed the victory for SIUE, hurling three hitless innings in relief of Aren Cummings.
SIUE got the day started off strong in the 10-1 win. The Cougars picked up three RBIs each from Thomson and catcher Ryan Scheiever.
Andrew Beatty improved his season record to 3-3 with a six-hitter. He struck out four and allowed one run in the seven-inning game.
