Six-Run First Propels Cougars
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville scored six runs in the first inning Friday and went on to a 9-4 victory over Drury in college baseball action at SimmonsCooper Complex.
The Cougars, 16-15 and 10-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, won the first game of a four-game series with the Panthers. The same two teams are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a noon single game Sunday.
SIUE bats came alive early. The Cougars put together a strong inning with seven hits. Steve Doll ripped a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Daniel Thomson provided the biggest offensive output for the Cougars. He collected three hits and four RBIs. Adam Eggemeyer matched Thomson's hit total as the Cougars collected 13 hits overall.
Drury starting pitcher Blake Evans was roughed up by the Cougars. After giving up six runs in the first inning, Evans, who suffered his first loss of the season, gave up all nine SIUE runs on 13 hits in his five innings of work.
Cody Litteken hurled five innings for his fourth win of the season. He struck out five and scattered seven hits. Daniel Bennett pitched the final four innings of the game and earned his first save of the season.
The windy conditions at SimmonsCooper Complex gave outfielders fits Friday night. Drury, 17-14 overall and 7-7 in GLVC play, took advantage in the fifth with a pair of wind-aided home runs from R.J. Knese and Justin Skinner.
