April 5, 2008 Cougars Garner DH Sweep O'FALLON, MO. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville took the first two games of a four-game series Saturday with a sweep over Missouri-St. Louis. In a twi-night doubleheader at T.R. Hughes Ballpark, SIUE doubled up UMSL 10-5 in the opener and took game two 7-0. SIUE, now 13-13 overall and 7-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, rapped 15 hits in the opener. Ben Bartley led the Cougars with three hits and three RBIs. Aren Cummings ran his record to 4-2 with eight innings of work. He scattered five hits and gave up three runs. UMSL, 11-15 and 6-8, managed just four hits off SIUE hurler Cody Litteken in game two. Litteken fanned five in the seven-inning shutout. The Cougars got all the scoring they needed in the first inning when Cory Bunner tripled and scored on an infield out by Adam Eggemeyer. Daniel Thomson provided fireworks in the fourth inning. he gave SIUE a 3-0 lead with his second home run of the season, a two-run blast that helped Michael Hopkins cross the plate. Hopkins had opened the inning with a walk off UMSL starter-loser Linds Prestia. The same two teams play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Sunday. -siue cougars- |
