USI Lefty Thwarts Cougars
          EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Cory Julian threw nine strong innings Friday as Southern Indiana baseball took the first game of a four-game series at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
          Julian, a left-hander, scattered six hits and gave up an unearned run in the seventh inning for his third win of the season. Southern Indiana improved to 16-8 overall and 7-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The loss evened SIUE's record at 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the GLVC.
          USI grabbed the lead early, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first inning off SIUE starter Andrew Beatty. The Screaming Eagles added two more in the fourth when designated hitter Chad Werry blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence.
          SIUE outhit USI 6-5 in its first home game of the 2008 season.
          The same two teams return to SimmonsCooper Complex Saturday at noon for a doubleheader. The fourth game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
