March 17, 2008 SIUE Looks to Answer Pitching Questions EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team is ready to regroup after playing 11 games in eight days. SIUE participated in the Phoenix Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., over spring break. During the six-day road trip SIUE went 5-2, including a 27-5 victory over Mayville. After finishing the invitational and getting one practice in, the Cougars hit the road again to take on Lewis. SIUE split four games with Lewis, bringing their season record to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference games. With the whirlwind tour the Cougars have been on, it has been hard for the team to answer early season questions. The largest questions for the Cougars revolve around the pitching staff. "We are still trying to figure out our pitching situation. Our walks are down from what they were in our first few games, so that is good, but we still have some questions that need to be answered," said Collins. Through the first 15 games, Cody Litteken (St. Jacob) is leading the Cougar pitching staff. In three starts, Litteken has a 2-1 record to go a long with his 2.13 earned run average. For Coach Collins, Mitchell Fairley (Quincy) and David Scott (Edwardsville) have been showing a lot of positives for the Cougars. "Fairley and Scott have been bright spots for us so far; they have both been pitching well." In four appearances, Fairley has nine strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA. Scott is tied for the team lead with 15 strikeouts, in addition to his 3.14 ERA. The Cougars will get another chance to answer their pitching questions on Wednesday when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri State. Game time is 6 pm. -siue cougars- |
