SIUE Baseball Signs Three for 2007
(EDWARDSVILLE, IL.) The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team has added three players to the 2007 roster.
SIUE Coach Gary Collins and Assistant Coach Tony Stoecklin welcomed Christian Rohlfing (Waterloo), Zach Everist (Pleasant Plains) and Zach Stead (Springfield) for next season.
The Cougars are coming off their fourth 40-win season in school history. It was SIUE's best finish at 40-19-1 since the 2001 season. SIUE advanced to the NCAA Tournament and was the final Great Lakes Valley Conference team standing in the championships.
Rohlfing is the son of former Cougar Ron Rohlfing (1969-1973). Ron Rohlfing played in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. His son, Christian, is an infielder that Collins said he hopes will mature into an outstanding player.
"He's an outstanding three-sport athlete," said Collins. "We're hoping that once he settles in with one sport that he will develop into an outstanding baseball player."
Everist and Stead are both transfers from Lincoln Land Community College.
Everist, a left-handed pitcher, led Lincoln Land in wins with a 7-4 record and a 4.63 earned run average. In 70 innings pitched, Everist recorded 86 strikeouts and opponents batted just .220.
"He's a big strikeout left-hander with good stuff," said Stoecklin. "He'll have to limit his walks to have success at this level."
Stead provides some needed depth at the catcher position. Stead originally attended Miami (Ohio) and then transferred to Lincoln Land. He batted .235 with 20 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases this past season at Lincoln Land.
"Zach is a very solid defensive catcher," said Stoecklin. "We expect him to have a good number of starts next spring."
