May 6, 2007 SIUE Completes Sweep EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The winning streak is now 10 games for the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team after a 3-2 victory Sunday over Bellarmine at Roy Lee Field. The win brought SIUE to 35-13 overall on the season and 26-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to finish the regular season. SIUE, ranked No. 26 nationally in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II poll, will now wait to see who its opponent will be for the first round of the GLVC Tournament, which begins Thursday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget. The GLVC has at least four more games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, which will determine the seeds for the league tournament. SIUE, which clinched the top seed in the tournament, will play the No. 6 seed. There are at least three different teams which could end up as the No. 6 seed as play ends Tuesday night. With the loss, Bellarmine fell to 27-28 and 23-15 in the GLVC. Bellarmine figures to have clinched a spot in the league tournament as well as Drury and Southern Indiana. Northern Kentucky, Indianapolis, Saint Joseph's and Quincy are battling for the final two spots. On Sunday, SIUE was down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third when Ryan Czyz and Cory Bunner both drove home runs to put SIUE up 2-1. The Cougars added another in the fourth as Czyz drove home Seth Hall. Bellarmine added one more in the fifth, but it was not enough as SIUE went on to win 3-2. Luke Vine recorded the win as he went to 5-2 on the season, and Nate Nevin recorded the loss as he fell to 5-4 on the season. Nick Taylor threw the final inning for the Cougars and collected his fourth save of the season. -siue cougars- |
