SIUE Extends Winning Streak To Nine Games
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team increased its winning streak to nine games with two big wins over Bellarmine 3-1 and 5-2 Saturday at Roy Lee Field.
The two wins solidified SIUE's No. 1 position in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as well as the top seed for next week's GLVC Tournament in Sauget. The Cougars increased their record to 25-10 in the GLVC and 34-13 overall.
Bellarmine fell to 23-14 in the GLVC and 27-27 overall.
In the first game of the day, Steve Doll brought home both Ben Bartley and Ryan Czyz with a two-run double double that put the Cougars up 2-1.
James Hertel recorded his fifth win of the season, notching six strikeouts in his seven innings pitched. Bellarmine's Michael Thompson fell to 7-4 on the season with the loss.
In the second game, SIUE's Adam Tallman hurled a no-hitter through six innings en route to the Cougars' second win of the day.
Tallman recorded 10 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. The win increased his record to 5-3 on the season. Bellarmine's Ryan Morrison recorded the loss as he fell to 6-6 on the season.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars rallied for three runs when Czyz drove in Michael DalPozzo and Brent Rynearson with a two-base hit. Cory Bunner then drove in Czyz with his single.
SIUE will finish its series with Bellarmine Sunday at 1 p.m. at Roy Lee Field. The field for the GLVC Tournament likely will not be announced until after GLVC makeup games through Tuesday evening.
